Svenska Sällskapet för Antropologi och Geografi
VEGASYMPOSIUM 2010
Professor emeritus Ulf Hannerz, Stockholms universitet,
tilldelas Anders Retzius medalj i guld 2010 för sina insatser för
den internationella antropologin, särskilt för banbrytande
bidrag inom urbanantropologi, medieantropologi och globaliseringens
antropologi.
for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (SCASSS), och är medlem
av Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien och American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Hans arbeten har utgivits i original eller översättning på
14 språk. På förslag från Ulf Hannerz är
temat för årets Vegasymposium
“Contemporary Ways of Worldmaking”
The philosopher Nelson Goodman had this to say in his Ways of Worldmaking
(1978):
“Much but by no means all worldmaking consists of taking
apart and putting together, often conjointly; on the one hand, of dividing
wholes into parts and partitioning kinds of subspecies, analyzing complexes
into component features, drawing distinctions; on the other hand, of
composing wholes and kinds out of parts and members and subclasses,
combining features into complexes, and making connections. Such composition
or decomposition is normally effected or assisted or consolidated by
the application of labels: names, predicates, gestures, pictures, etc.”
Philosophers and anthropologists often face the same questions, but
the ways they go about answering them are mostly different. In the Vega
Day symposium of 2010, the searchlight is on the diverse kinds of activities
which now contribute to shaping understandings of the world and of how
its parts fit together. Such worldmaking activities include scholars
and journalists offering scenarios for the global future; major media
news agencies assembling a continuous flow of information and images;
nations carefully constructing both their local heritages and their
forward-looking global brands; competing arts and sports events designed
to focus world attention on particular cities, countries and regions;
and more.
The symposium speakers will offer closeup views, from different vantage
points, of some of the organized ways of worldmaking––their
taking apart and putting together, their labelling and picturing––in
the early twenty-first century. The speakers, apart from Ulf Hannerz,
are Arjun Appadurai (New York University), Thomas Fillitz (University
of Vienna), Zeynep Devrim Gürsel (University of Michigan), and
Sulayman N. Khalaf (Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage).
The symposium takes place on Thursday, 22 April, 9.30 am-12.30
pm, in Beijersalen, Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien (The Royal
Swedish Academy of Sciences), Stockholm.
